Sometimes
in Florida thunderstorms just seem to sneak up on you without
warning. During the summer months, you can expect them almost
every afternoon.
Florida, among other "claims to fame," is the lightning
capital of United States. Atmospheric conditions are perfect
over our peninsula for creating lightning strikes.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch and Warning
The National Weather Service is responsible for issuing both a
thunderstorm "Watch" and thunderstorm "Warning."
THUNDERSTORM WATCH
When conditions are such that winds reach or exceed 58 miles per
hour or hail three-fourths of an inch in diameter are likely to
occur.
THUNDERSTORM WARNING
A severe thunderstorm meeting the "thunderstorm watch"
conditions have been sighted or observed on radar.
Warning signs of thunderstorm conditions
Dark
towering or threatening clouds
Distant
lightning and thunder
Yard Hazards
Dead or rotting trees and branches can fall during a severe
thunderstorm and cause injury or property damage. Time
permitting, tie down lawn chairs and other objects, or else
bring them inside a storage shed, garage or other secure place.
Personal
Protection if caught in a storm
Attempt to
get inside of a building.
If no
building is available, squat low, kneel or crouch in an open space, such
as a field, placing your hands on your knees.
Place your
hands on your knees and do not lie flat on the ground.
Never stand
underneath a single tree. If in a wooded area, find an
area protected by a low clump of trees.
Avoid
natural lightning rods such as tools, golf clubs,
tractors, fishing rods, bicycles or camping equipment.
