HURRICANE TERMS  
The Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30.  
Hurricane (Tropical Storm) Watch: issued for your part of the State indicates the possibility that you could experience hurricane conditions within 48 hours. This watch should trigger your family's disaster plan, and protective measures should be initiated, especially those actions that require extra time such as securing a boat, leaving a barrier island, etc.

Hurricane (Tropical Storm) Warning: issued for your part of the State indicates that sustained winds of at least 74 mph are expected within 36 hours or less. Once this warning has been issued, your family should be in the process of completing protective actions and deciding the safest location to be during the storm..

 

Category 1 Hurricane: 74 - 95 mph winds.

 

Category 2 Hurricane: 96 - 110 mph winds.

 

Category 3 Hurricane: 111 - 130 mph winds.

 

Category 4 Hurricane: 131 - 155 mph winds.

 

Category 5 Hurricane: Greater than 155 mph winds.  
   
TORNADO TERMS

Tornado

Tornado Watch: issued when weather conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes. Stay informed and be prepared to take shelter.
Tornado Warning: issued when a funnel cloud has been sighted or indicated by radar. Take shelter immediately.
Tornadoes are rated by the Enhanced Fujita Scale:

 

EF0: 65 - 85 mph winds.

 

EF1: 86 - 110 mph winds.

 

EF2: 111 - 135 mph winds.

 

EF3: 136 - 165 mph winds.  

 

EF4: 166 - 200 mph winds.  

 

EF5: Over 200 mph winds.

What you should do in the event of an approaching tornado:

Stay away from windows.

Do not open doors and windows.

Seek shelter in an interior room or closet on the lower level of your house.

Leave mobile homes and move to a low-lying area or ditch.

If seeking shelter outdoors, do so in a ditch or low-lying area.

Protect your head from falling debris and flying objects.

 

Do not seek shelter in a vehicle.
