CRIME

Protecting your home against crime takes only a few common sense steps to help keep criminals from choosing your home. By walking around your home in the daytime and again at night you can pinpoint the areas of your home where burglars can conceal themselves in the darkness or behind bushes or shrubs. Most burglars will look for easily accessible homes, however by taking these steps you will make your home less accessible to crime.

Theft
  • Be sure expensive belongings are hidden from view by using curtains and blinds. Do not advertise your belongings.
  • Illuminate dark areas around your house that could be a potential hiding spot. You can do this by installing motion activated lights.
  • Trim or remove any bushes or shrubs near doors and windows.
  • Install deadbolt locks on any exterior doors, and be sure the frame is strong enough to secure the deadbolt.
  • Install security locks on sliding doors and windows. Be careful when using shutters to secure windows as they can prevent the use of that window as a fire escape.
  • If you are out of town have a neighbor bring in your newspapers and trash receptacles.
  • Use timers on the lights and TVs to have the appearance that somebody is home.
  • Keep valuables in a safe that is secured to the home or place them in a bank safety deposit box.
  • Marking your valuables with a unique permanent identification will make it more difficult for it to be sold illegally.
  • Have an alarm system and use it. Additionally, advertise that you have an alarm system by placing stickers on doors and windows.
